PLEASE - Seeing Stars (1969)

ALBUM REVIEW By SAM SCARPELLI
2014 JUNE 27

Here is a band that is the meaning of hidden gem, featuring one of my favorite songwriters, Peter Dunton. This was one of a few different projects by him, all of which share a common thread of whimsical songwriting with a sense of melancholy. These aspects are infused within a matrix of the most classic 60s London rock imaginable. Much of what we associate with being the 60s rock sound was invented by bands like this back when it was a novel idea and a breath of fresh air. Apparently Please was one of the biggest Mod rock bands of the day, though they decided to keep their ambitions on the local scene where their largest crowds were.

The driving force behind the record is Peter Dunton, who is the primary songwriter, lead vocalist, drummer, and organist on the album. His spooky and melodic vocals sit perfectly with the overall mood of the songs and are an important aspect of the music as a whole. The cohesiveness of the compositions are aided by the number of instruments he plays, and you can hear a complexity in songwriting with the addition of good pop sensibilities. I am also a big fan of his unique drumming style, which often accentuates the cadence of his lyrics and has a very tribal rhythm. As for the organ it is a beautiful and essential part which ties everything together in a shroud of epic melodies and emotion.

This album has a wealth of innovative performances and a number of memorable moments. There is an immediate and profound beauty in 'Time Goes By' especially the main organ melodies and lyrical themes. Another highlight for me was the superb guitar solo in 'Rise and Shine' which really lifts you to the heights of early rock. However it is the second to last song 'But' that always gets me moving around the most, and this is the song that I feel would be the best representation of the style of the era. Overall a fantastic album with quality songwriting, impressive musicianship and everlasting charm!
